Ticket to Anywhere -- Suggestions?

A friend of mine has offered to sell me a United Airlines Worldwide Economy voucher good for anywhere that United Airlines travels direct. Co-share airline partners do me no good.

Unfortunately, it expires on December 31, 2005. So all travel must be completed by then. I am looking to travel over Christmas and to return on December 31, 2005.

My first choice was to travel to Bangkok, Thailand, but all economy flights are booked.

Any suggestions on where I can travel? Note, the flight will only cost me $250 +taxes, so it needs to be an exotic location. However, I need to be able to afford the lodging and cost of living...

Please help me.

Wow, what fun! Do you like heat or are you more of a cold-weather fan? Christmas in the Southern Hemisphere can be cool, with the reverse season. And there are so many great choices -- I'd go to Africa at the drop of a hat with this kind of offer. South America and Australia could be amazing too. That doesn't narrow things down much does it? :-) My vote, though, is somewhere in sub-Saharan Africa with a coast.

Ok without doing any reaserch to see if these places meet your criteria I suggest the following (not becuase I've been, but because I want to go or because I've heard AMAZING things):

Australia
Brazil
Vietnam
Russia

GREECE! I doubt they fly direct, so... how about somewhere else that's warm?

Stef - I love both types of weather (cold and warm). Africa is incredible, but United does not fly direct, they use other carriers.

BB - Love your suggestions, but no dice...
Australia - no seats available
Brazil - no seats avail
Vietnam - can't go - work conflict
Russia - way too cold this time of the year

Chase - count on it.

PE - Germany - I am debating flying there, purchasing a rail pass and backpacking the experience. But it is damn cold there right now.
Ireland - definetly considering it.
England - been there already...

MPL - Greece - another good choice. But as you noted, they don't fly direct.

WH - You selected my favorite country and favorite cities, however, you left off the best -Istanbul. United does not fly direct.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I am getting anxious to visit all the above.

I have also eliminated:

Hawaii - no seats
Peru - no direct flights
Costa Rica - no direct flights

This sucks. I am traveling at the wrong time.

However, Puerto Rico is still available. San Juan specifically. Hmmmm.

oh THAT's why Hawaii wouldn't work. Geez, I would have saved my precious email time if I had known the full deal...

For my money, it doesn't get any better than Madrid. It's more expensive since they switched to the Euro, but still very affordable (especially if you're willing to stay at a hostel). Lisbon is another fun choice. What can I say, I'm a big fan of the Iberian peninsula!

Puerto Rico is amazing and I love visiting. My roommate is from there and is leaving Saturday for Thanksgiving.

Have you ever been? It is beautiful. Not a bad choice at all.

Although Greece would also be my #1-but no direct flights.

I have one of those on United too I need to get rid of too - from their 'around the world' promotion. I wasnt sure what to sell it for.

FYI - i looked into using it myself and their were tons of blackout dates for the places I was looking to go.

You should check with them and see where is availible during your dates before you get your heart set on somewhere. I was looking at Greece and Fiji. Good luck have fun!

oh, if it is that same promotion I just mentioned. One around the world ticket = 2 hawaii or caribbean tix

I would concur with the others who suggest some sort of Caribbean isle. However, this time of year is considered "high season", I believe, and will be more expensive than other times during the year (which are also expensive). St. Barth ranks number 1 in this Playaz' book, but no direct flight and very expensive (I dont know if you can fly direct to St Maarten or not, its very close to St B) You can go to Jamaica and stay at the Ritz for relatively cheap (when compared to other Ritz hotels), however, you are advised to never leave the hotel grounds.

Cold weather spots? Banff is supposedly pretty cool, Telluride is too, but no direct flights.

How about NYC? Always cool at xmas time. Not very exotic, but I like to visit there.
